Underbalanced Drilling (UBD) Operations & Well Control

Course Summary / Target Audience

Supervision and control of underbalanced (UB) operations requires specialized knowledge that exceeds conventional experience and training. This unique course targets decision makers responsible for implementation of underbalanced wells (company men, toolpushers, and service company engineers/equipment supervisors). As shown in the syllabus below, students spend extensive time using UBiTS, a PC based interactive training simulator designed especially for UB wells.

This training is critical for the UBD service/rig interface and will minimize/eliminate the amount of operational issues, communication block and significantly improve the probability of a successful campaign, even on the first well. The additional cost of training is offset by a good understanding of responsibilities and communication on the wellsite to minimize NPT.

Course Outline
Day

The course was developed according to IADC’s Wellcap training specification and is accredited to provide underbalanced well control training certificates to students.

It is important to note that current conventional well control certificates are no longer required by IADC to certify participants.

Advanced UB Training Simulator

During the course, students learn UB well behavior and control techniques using an advanced

PC-based training simulator called UBiTS.

Students can interactively visualize the cause and effect relationship between injection rates, surface choke pressure, and formation flowrate.
